Settle Down, Chiefs Fans ... It'll Be Okay

I'm remarkably calm considering that the Colts completely showed the Chiefs who the real daddy is. I think Chiefs' fans should be too.

Chiefs' fans, face reality: this was not a playoff team. They earned every right to be there, but they simply were not talented enough. The good news is that the Chiefs sent a pretty clear message to the front office: "We... Need... talent!" Last thing I wanted was to win a playoff game and give our front office the impression that we were good enough going into next year.

More importantly, let's not allow our frustration to exaggerate the problems with the Chiefs. The Chiefs showed they have a defense that can carry us to victory, but they can't do it when the offense goes three and out for an entire half.I'm going to prepare myself for a long offseason of frustrating arguments. I'm going to hear from people who will insist that the Chiefs need to completely rebuild. That's horse manure. The Chiefs have a terrific foundation to work off of. They have a very young, talented defense that can carry them in games. The Chiefs don't have to become outstanding on offense. They just need to be good enough. They can't afford to be a team that turns the ball over on virtually every possession against Baltimore or only gets one first down in an entire half against the Colts. Trying to rebuild a Chiefs' team would be like tearing down Arrowhead because we only need "slight renovations."

And for those that want to get rid of Herm Edwards, that is also despicable. Herm Edwards is a terrific coach who led us to the playoffs. The problem is, he was given an inexperienced coordinator and basically had the power to run an offense that he knows little about. Herm's philosophy is outstanding--drain time from the clock, rely on the run game, and keep the defense off the field. His offensive playcalling is not. But that's not on Herm. The Chiefs need an offensive coordinator who can run the offense on his own and has the guts to stand up to Herm and tell him that he absolutely, positively cannot run an offense that way. Still, you cannot deny that the Chiefs have built a terrific defense under Herm's direction.

Finally, I'm going to hear a bunch of arguments about how Trent Green lost this game. He didn't. His receivers dropped pretty much one catchable pass per drive (pathetic, considering that each drive only included one pass play), and his offensive line wouldn't even have given Donovan McNabb any room to throw the ball. I'm not completely comfortable with the quarterback situation, but this loss cannot be pinned on Trent Green.

Let's not get into the overdone process of scapegoating or exaggeration. It's time to move on. We have leaks, but they're easy to fix. We have a long offseason to discuss and address these fixes. Let's get it started, folks. In the meantime, please, please put the knife down. It's not that bad, Chiefs' fans.
