I'm sure you have no idea what in the hell you just watched, but fear not for I have the answers you seek.
That was a segment from a Japanese television show entitled "Ichiro Versus" in which Seattle's very own Ichiro Suzuki faces off against famous Japanese people from all walks of life. Be it a famous actress, a lawyer, or a neuroscientist. The show airs every Saturday night in Japan, and features a few segments. The one you just watched was the word association segment, Ichiro's favorite, but also consists of a lengthy conversation and psychological test.
"I really enjoy it," Ichiro said after a taping last month. "It's tough, but exhilarating because you have to use your head. You're on the spot to crank out a meaningful thought in a split second. My brain's probably worked harder in these two years of taping than in my entire life combined. Even so, when it's over, I'm always thinking, 'I wish I would've been quick enough to say it this way.' "
It's basically "The Tonight Show", except, you know, it's funny and smart. For instance, take this excerpt from a recently taped episode with actress Keiko Matsuzaka.
Off-camera narrator: "Ready? Associate to this thought: First encounter."
Matsuzaka: "Your first step into an unknown world."
Ichiro: "Forgive me, I was just a curious 18-year-old." (Guest and studio hands laugh out loud.)
Of course, if they taped this in America, they'd make Ichiro learn how to dance.
