Broncos Don't Regret Trading up for Moss

The Broncos caught a lot of flak for their 2007 draft class. Specifically, trading up in the first round to take defensive end Jarvis Moss, and then using a fourth-round pick on Marcus Thomas, a player who had fallen off most teams' draft boards because of the pot.

So, why did Denver move up four spots in Round 1 to take a player that many mock draft nerds figured would be available when the team went on the clock with the 21st overall pick? Glad you asked: the Broncos had a plan. Three players topped their first-round wish list: Moss, Lawrence Timmons and Justin Harrell. General manager Ted Sundquist was hoping one of the three would last last until 21, and then the team would trade back into the first round -- both the Cowboys and Eagles had committed to swapping picks -- and grab whoever was left.

A funny thing happened on the way to the dance: the Steelers took Timmons at 15 and a pick later, the Packers nabbed Harrell. With only Moss left, the Broncos traded up and grabbed him at 17. So there you have it.
