There are a few thoughts that have run through my mind since Kobe Bryant announced that he would like to be traded. The one that's really sticking with me is the thought that Kobe Bryant has become a public relations mastermind. I think the years of Kobe being butchered by the media has taught him how to manipulate the media in his favor.
Yesterday, Kobe went on a public relations rampage, trying to turn the tide in his favor. And from the current buzz around the internets, I think his ploy is actually working.
In one day, Kobe has demonized the entire Lakers organization. He worked his magic to paint the Lakers front office staff as lying, incompetent bunch (there's a very good possibility that they are indeed all of those things). He stated that the L.A. Times Article which quoted a Lakers insider as saying that he was the reason Shaq was traded is what set him off. But maybe, just maybe, that was the perfect opportunity for Kobe to get what he really wanted.
So what does Kobe want?
In my opinion, he just wants to play for a contending team. I think he only sees two ways to get that: Either by the Lakers hiring Jerry West (the only person he actually trusts to build a contending team right away) or via a trade to a contender (In my eyes, the Bulls are the only team he'll be willing to be dealt to. And I wouldn't be surprised if Kobe's agent, Rob Pelinka are already working together to make that happen).
And what should the Lakers do?
In my eyes there are only two steps available to the Lakers:
1) Call Kobe and his agent in for a meeting immediately. Scratch that, drive down to Kobe's Newport Beach home and meet with him immediately. See if there is anyway to rectify the situation. They didn't do that with Shaq, and they are still paying for it today. I'm sure the only way to convince Kobe to stay is through hiring Jerry West. If Dr. Buss wants to keep Kobe, he has no choice but to do that. I don't know what it would take to make it happen. But whatever it is, they need to do it NOW.
2) If after their meeting they conclude that there is no way to fix the rift, they need to find the best deal possible for Kobe. Don't worry about sending him to another conference. Just get the best damn deal you can get. The only problem is that Kobe has to be in agreement with wherever they decide to send him because of his no trade clause. Not a nice situation for the Lakers to be in.
One last thought: If Kobe is traded what happens to Phil Jackson end up? Because you know he's not going to want to coach this team without Kobe.

Kobe Bryant is far from a marketing genius. He is a spoiled only child with a serious case of flawed character that has been given way too much from the Laker organization. It was only a matter of time when Kobe was going to erupt on the Lakers, as anyone with a sound mind can see that if he was not happy winning (3) championships with the Lakers and Shaq, then what would make anyone believe that he would remain happy in a rebuilding situation. Basically the Lakers got what they deserved. They turned on Shaq, abandoning the player who truely delivered the most when it counted (which the Shaq bashers love to forget), and put all their cards into a player who not only had to buy his way out of Civil Court in a rape case, but had open disdain of the team concept and of sharing the ball with Shaq, or anyone else for that matter. Kobe's bitterness is a result of the fact that he has to look in the mirror everyday and realize that he was a catalyst in the breakup of a special dynasty, which he is still not "man" enough to admit, and that his ego set back a once great organization 10 years, in which he snowed the media, fans, and Laker Brass that he could lead the Lakers to a championship on his own. Until the Laker management and the Laker fans wake up, the Laker organization will remain in a state of chaos as long as it centers itself around the problem known as Kobe Bryant.....By the way, Shaq bashers, ask Miami if they regret trading for Shaq. An NBA championship should answer that question for you, as substance is a much better quality to have on a team than ego and flash...

I have never been a Kobe fan, in fact I have always kind of despised the guy, but he is not wrong in this situation. Whatever you think of him personally, the guy is the best player in the NBA right now and he is being completely wasted in LA. I think the issue PETE is that he was told that they would start building a championship caliber team now, and not start rebuilding the franchise. If they told him that, and then lied about it, he has the right to be pissed. If my boss told me I was up for a promotion and then gave it to someone else, your damn right I would be pissed and would tell anyone who would listen. It doesn't matter that he makes millions of dollars. Every superstar in the league makes millions of dollars. And enough already with the rape case. First of all, men don't all of a sudden become rapists. If a man is a rapist chances are pretty damn good that it wasn't the first time it had happened. No other woman has come forward and cryed rape. And if she was raped, the fact that she didn't testify said all I need to know. As a woman, if I was raped, no amount of money in the world would prevent me from standing up and accusing my rapist in a court of law. He wasn't convicted so just let it go. And if Shaq believes Kobe about not getting him traded, why can't you? They would know better than anyone. There is no player in the league that is vilified more than Kobe. He shoots to much and he's a ball hog, he passes to much and he doesn't do enough to win the game. It's gotten to the point of ridiculousness. The bottom line is, he is the only one in that franchise who cares about winning. He has every right to be mad and I hope he gets traded (but please god not to the Suns.) Yeah, he probably is a rich, spoiled brat but that isn't the issue here. As a player, he wants to win. If the Lakers are to stupid or cheap to do that for their superstar, then he should go someplace that will. I have just defended Kobe Bryant, hell has indeed frozen over.

Kobe is right. These professional organizations have no loyalty. Their loyalty is to the franchise not the player. If Kobe is concerned about his legacy, he should not base it on being loyal to an institution. They tend to be about the bottom line.
I wish Jordan had gone to another contender near the end of his time with the Bulls since the team, like the Lakers organization, became concerned about the bottom line after his talent had filled the seats for years.
If it is about business then players are wise to do what is best for themselves.

Either Kobe and his fans have a short memory or they refuse to remember his last three years of performance since he choose to takeover the team. As I recall, did he not loose something like 15 out of 18 games close to end of the season for the Lakers in the first Kobe season, therefore eliminating the team from making the playoffs? The second season, after the Lakers took a 3-1 lead over Phoenix Suns, in the seventh game he did not perform well, missing a golden opportunity(Lakers could have been a true contender that season). Again, this season in his last game against Suns, he did not come through. Missing shot after shot, taking the team off a great tempo they were enjoying. In fact, it was his teammates especially Odom who played much better and yet instead shouldering some blame, Bryant the Great start blaming his teammates and everyone else. Let's all be honest, do you think Jordan would let his team lose the crucial seventh and final game especially after blowing a 3-1 lead? Do you really believe that Lebron have much better teammates around him and yet they are in the Eastern Finals. Kobe, please take responsibility(at least some, okay?)for your actions and then you will have more credibility. Also, it is getting tiring how so many of the reports(especially local ones are kissing up to him)and not reporting the facts and asking just creme puffs questions. Jerry Buss and others involved, please stop making a spoil child even more spoiled. Take a stand and in the long run, Kobe will be a better man for that.

The problem that we cannot avoid about Kobe is his character. A man with strong character does not take advantage of women and does not commit the heinous act that Kobe committed on that woman in Colorado. Kobe is a legally married man who proclaims himself a Christain and openly denounced his teammates lifestyles prior to his rape charge. That is why, Anny, the rape case against Kobe does not go away. If any other man had committed that act, and had the overwhelming physical evidence that the courts had against Kobe, that person would have been convicted, and his life would have been ruined. Period. Money freed Kobe, and everyone who seriously followed the case knows that. What makes me, and so many other Laker fans upset, is that the Lakers invested their future in a man whose character is as low as it gets, and traded away a true Warrior, a decent family man like Shaq, whose heart reaches out to more kids and people in need than any other celebrity I know of. No one has heard of Shaq being accused of rape. Why? Character. Plus, how could anyone believe anything that Kobe Bryant has to say anyway. Kobe does not tell the truth. Look at his patterns. One, he never takes responsibility for anything, and always blames the other person. It is never Kobe's fault. Most people forget that Kobe signed his contract with the Lakers a day after Shaq was traded. Why did he not do it before he was traded? Obviously, and even the most avid Kobe fan can deduct, with very clear logic, that Kobe was not going to sign until Shaq was no longer a Laker. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out. If Kobe had any decency and moxy, he would admit that he was involved in the trade of Shaquille O'neil. Fans would be angry, but they would have to respect the fact that he came clean and was honest. By his outrage, and public denounciations of the Lakers, Kobe is showing everyone that he is guilty of lying, and that he has finally been exposed for what he really is about. Gross manipulation and pathological lying. This is what you get with Kobe Bryant. And as far as Kobe crying that Buss said that he would rebuild around him immediately, go back to the tapes and listen to what Kobe had to say at his press conference when he resigned with the Lakers. He said that is was going to be a long process of rebuilding and that he would be patient and do whatever it takes to help rebuild the Lakers into a contender again. What a far cry from what we have heard today....

First of all PETE, Kobe is an entertainer, plain and simple. He's not running for President, he's a god damn basketball player so please spare me your righteous indignation. I don't care who he is as a person. That is not the issue here. Do you know Kobe personally? If you don't then you have no right to talk about him as though you do. You talk about Shaq like he is a saint. I like Shaq and yes he gives a lot of money to charities, but so does every other superstar athlete and when a man makes as much money as Shaq does, it is his responsibilty to give back to the community. Shaq is a great player and a funny guy, but frankly he can be an asshole in the press. You keep going on about the rape case and your playing judge and jury. As I said before, I don't care if Kobe offered her $100 million dollars, no amount of money should have prevented her from saying he raped her. Taking money to keep quiet negates her being the victim. No amount of money in the world would be enough to keep me quiet. Did he cheat on his wife? Yeah and so apparantly has your precious Shaq. Again, you keep attacking Kobe's character as though you know him. You say he's a liar, but your making assumptions. And even if he is, WHO CARES! He's an athlete! Can he put the ball in the hoop? Yes he can. Anything other than that is nobody's business but his and his families. I love how people think they have the right to judge celebrities just because they are famous. You don't have that right. The issue that is up for discussion isn't about Kobe's character, it's about whether or not he should be traded. That's it, end of story. If Kobe wasn't on the Lakers, you would be envying the Grizzlies record right now. Kobe is the Lakers. I don't care if Kobe personally cleaned out Shaq's locker. Shaq got traded, end of story. Let it go. Even Shaq is saying Kobe had nothing to do with it. Unless you have never made a mistake in your life, keep your ridiculous opinions to yourself and keep it about basketball. Frankly I, or anyone else on here, don't care to read the ignorance spewing out of your mouth.

Kobe came out with his complaints (I believe), to get some attention& take some away from the NBA playoff's.
He probably could not stand all the praise given to LaBron & D.Gibson: Parker,Ginobli,Oberto & the great Tim Duncan by the Media. He just had to snare someof their glory by publicly crying "wolf" to get his name in the NBA playoff's one way or another.
He is the one to blame for his situation. He caused the great, Carl Malone's decision not to return to the Laker's with his idiotic call to the press badmouthing Malone, saying he wouldn't play with him because: Kobe believed Malone had made a pass at his wife. How would anyone throw such an uneccessary tantrum & attack a teammate (even publically) over what had transpired? Kobe's wife approached Carl Malone, who was in attendance at a Laker's game. She asked him why he was wearing cowboy boots, was he going hunting? Malone laughed & answered, "yes, hunting for little Mexican chicks". Big deal! Kobe's wife ran crying to him that this constituted a "pass", which supposedly infuriated Kobe causing him to call the press to attack an upstanding man. In the1st place, it was Kobe's wife who approached Malone with the cowboy boots/hunting question. Malone's answer, if anything, was a compliment as well as a joke & certainly wasn't intended to seduce her there during the game. Carl Malone was a valuable member of the Laker's who was injured, rehabiliitated & making his decision whether to return to play or to retire. Kobe Bryant made certain the famed "Mailman" didn't return & take any shots or glory away from him, "the selfish crybababy of the NBA". His actions, disrespecting both Shaq & Malone, make him a loser as a human being & he deserves to keep on crying.

ps, I forgot to say what a despicable being he is for trying to make himself look better when he was charged with the rape offense. He chose to badmouth Shaq by saying that Shaq had done the same to women but payed them off to keep them quiet. This was deliberately done to smear Shaq's reputaion. |It caused trouble between Shaq & his wife until proven to be a lie. What kind of a man deliberately attacks another with a lie like this because he is caught being an wife cheater, if not a rapist? Even if this nasty statement about Shaq had proven to be true, Kobe would be a voluntary "snitch" bringing marital problems & disrespect to his teammate for the purpose of trying to excuse his own dasterdly deeds. What a sorry human being this Kobe Bryant has proven himself to be. I find it sad that such a person has been so blessed with such outstanding athletic ability. He needs to stop snivelling, work on his ethics, integrity, compassion, loyalty, sharing & give thanks 24x7 for his blessings.

If I can make a comment. Some player like Kobe never learn. One Man doesnt make the team. Its a group
effort. If you look at the Lakers years ago. They had the best of everything and everyone made the points and everyone made the team great. Of course
Shaq is gone because Kobe proved that he could make
a difference and look what happened.
Now look at the finals this year. Bryant, Nowinsky,
Nash, L.James, Shaq, all great players but one good
man doesnt win a championship it takes an effort.
Kobe is going to continue to be unhappy because
he cant get the winning glory. Of course his
chip on his shoulder is catching up with him.
A good man would make his team work and earn the
championship. Not Kobe, he has to be the prize and
get all the attention.
The folks that played with him for the championships the've won dont want nothing to do with him and
play with him.
Can you blame them? Sit Buckwheats butt down and
give him the riot act. Put up or shut up.
I wanted to say this for a long time.
